We received Wendy Orr’s “Return to Nim’s Island” from the library interlibrary loan and we’ve been limiting ourselves to a chapter a day. It stretches out the story and we can talk about each chapter. We also choose something from each chapter to extend the lesson, creating a very personalized unit study based on the book.
During many of the chapters, we go back to our fail-safe and learn more about sea lions. Selkie is such a lovable character in the story. The idea of a sea lion circus appeals to us as we read the story.
I have requested “Draw 50 Sharks, Whales and Other Sea Creatures” by Lee Ames, from the interlibrary loan. I think it will be fun to draw pictures and create posters of sea creatures like Nim did to get publicity for her Sea Lion Circus.
“Seals & Sea Lions” by John Wexo is another book I have requested. We have been thinking about making a sea lion plushie stuffed animal toy but we haven’t been able to find any patterns. We decided to research sea lions and try to create our own pattern. We have a walrus beanie baby but no sea lions! I was sure we had one somewhere in the house. We have a few iguana beanie babies but not precisely a marine iguana so we might try to make one of those also.
