Happy New Year! 2014

Happy New Year!

It’s very exciting to start a new year.  We traditionally watch the Rose Bowl parade and play board games on New Year’s Day.

We also still do lessons.  My kids  don’t always know when we are doing lessons, but I try to incorporate learning in a fun way into everything we do.

However, during the holidays, we do try to enjoy each day and to live in the moment rather than spending all of our time studying.  The best part is spending time together and enjoying one another.

Land Biome Lesson Plan

I’m working on a new lesson plan for my 10th grader in Biology.  Biomes are fun and something we’ve covered in the past.  Because it’s not new for us, it can be hard to know where to start.  However, I’ve found that a little refresher is a good thing, building confidence and enthusiasm for a subject we’ve enjoyed in the past.

There are several good ways to introduce (or re-introdue) the topic of land biomes.  There are quite a few good power point presentations online and you can always check out the library too.

Introducing Land Biomes

Utilize your public library.  Look up books on the subject of land biomes and check them out.  You can often request books via the computer before going to the library and then have the library hold them for pickup.

Access the computer catalog for your library.  For books providing an overview of the subject, search biomes.  Don’t worry that some of the books may seem to basic or easy for an older student.  You can pick and choose among what’s available and what appeals to you.

You can also use a bookseller such as Amazon.com to help you create a booklist.  You can buy the books directly from Amazon, but I often will use my booklist to search the library before purchasing anything.

There are also loads of resources for free on the internet.  From wikipedia to individual teachers who provide information online, you can search for “land biomes” and get an amazing amount of information without leaving home.

Suggested Booklist:

  • Earth’s Biomes by Donna Latham
  • Many Biomes, One Earth by Sneed Collard
  • What is a Biome? by Bobbie Kalman
  • Biomes and Ecosystems by Barbara Davis

You can also look around 577 in your library’s Dewey Decimal system organization.  You should be able to find interesting books on biomes in this area.  If your library has a youth or juvenile section, check that out first and then see what the adult section has to offer.  It can be very productive to bring your children along with you and see which books they are most interested in on the topic as well.

Once the topic has been introduced, you can either start researching specific land biomes or you can start various projects on land biomes.
